Carafe Wine Makers: Craft and Enjoy Your Own Varietal
Wineries have become so specialized in recent years that it was only a matter of time before somebody introduced the “micro-winery” concept. At Alexandria’s Carafe Wine Makers, you can blend grapes from a huge variety of sources, local and international, to create the perfect flavor for your palate. The process is simple—come in, consult with the staff about the flavors and textures you like in your wine, and they’ll recommend varietal grape juices to blend. Return in four to six weeks to bottle, cork, and label your personal wine and take it home with you. It’ll be drinkable right off the bat, but leaving it to age will improve the flavor. Sure, your creations probably aren’t going to stack up to the work of well-established vintners, but it’s the experience you’re after, not the product. This is a totally unique activity for wine lovers that shouldn’t be missed. They also host a myriad of events and a regular tasting club.
